Frozen Embryo Transfer(FET)

What is Frozen Embryo Transfer?

A Frozen Embryo Transfer, or a FET, is a procedure for infertility treatment when a doctor transfers frozen embryos left after previous IVF or ICSI cycles. These surplus embryos help a couple make a subsequent attempt after a failure or try for a second baby even years after a first kid was born.

Benefits of a FET

Before a FET, there is a possibility to achieve maximum oocytes retrieval per one attempt and store surplus embryos for more attempts. This procedure requires only the preparation of the uterus and does not require the stimulation of follicle growth and ovarian puncture. So it helps reduce the incidence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome as well as decrease the multiple pregnancy risk. The FET is essentially convenient and less expensive or stressed. To perform the FET, embryos should be frozen and then thawed. Only high-quality embryos are selected in order to increase the success level of the final outcome.

When Is It Used?

Several studies report that the live birth rate after a FET was better than that of a fresh embryo transfer (see: Major Factors Affecting the Live Birth Rate After Frozen Embryo Transfer Among Young Women). Also, according to data presented in 2013 by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), women of advanced maternal age (36-42 years) had a significantly higher live birth rate using frozen embryos compared to the fresh embryo transfer. The live birth rate after the FET was 74.5 per cent in comparison with the women who used fresh embryos with the live birth rate of 53.7 per cent. Thus, many researches show that a FET: increases pregnancy success rates, improves live birth rates, decreases miscarriage rates, reduces the risk of premature birth.
